What Type of Specimen is Collected for DOT Testing?
For alcohol testing
- This may involve saliva or breath analysis in the initial screening and breath analysis in further confirmation tests.
- The specimen collection is generally conducted by breath alcohol technicians (BAT) and screening test technicians (STT) using approved alcohol testing devices like breath analyzers.
- DOT recommends employers to use only urine specimens for drug testing.
- The use of instant drug result kits or devices or point of contact testing is not permitted for DOT drug testing.
- Urine samples are collected from a person and directly sent to the laboratory for testing or it may be collected at the laboratory.
- Blood samples may be drawn from a person, in addition to breath and urine, for post-accident testing as mandated in FRA Part 219 Subpart C.
How DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Differs from Regular Drug and Alcohol Testing
DOT drug and alcohol testing differ from regular drug and alcohol testing in the following ways:
- The testing is performed by laboratories that are certified by the Department of Health and Human Services. However, the regular drug testing may be performed by an agency that is approved and accredited by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP).
- The test results are kept confidential by a service agent or an employer and are not disclosed to anyone without the written consent of the person who has undergone the testing.
- In situations like administrative proceedings, grievances, and legal proceedings, the results may be released with the personnel’s consent.
